PFAS is detected in well water in Pound Ridge NY by the Westchester County Department of Health (WCDOH).

The Town of Pound Ridge, NY alerted residents by email on April 19 to inform them that PFAS compounds had been found in town water wells by the Westchester County Department of Health (WCDOH). While seeking to pinpoint the source of the PFAS groundwater contamination, given the lack of industrial or commercial businesses in Pound Ridge, a preliminary investigation suggests everyday use of septic systems in the area as the likely source.

The email directed residents to an information page on the town website, which stated “it is advisable to seek assistance from a New York State-accredited laboratory. These laboratories can offer guidance on appropriate testing methodologies, interpret test results, and recommend suitable measures to mitigate PFAS levels in private wells.” Collecting water samples must be conducted by trained personnel.

WCDOH detected contamination from PFAS in several drinking water wells with levels greater than New York State standards for two common PFAS compounds: perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS).
